Glossary

This glossary was written in German, so unfortunately the sorting by letter in other languages does not quite fit. Nevertheless, you will find all relevant terms and information here for easy reference.

A

AdBlocker

Program that recognizes and automatically hides advertising

Account

An account is your personal profile in which you can make settings

Algorithm

Clearly defined, unambiguous sequence of steps to achieve a goal, e.g. to execute a command. Every computer program consists of many different and complex interlinked algorithms

App

Short form of "application", i.e. an application/program. The short form is often used for programs on mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets

B

Backup

Backup copy of data that is created so that it is not lost

Operating system

Program that converts input into images and commands by clicking or pressing a button and makes the device, e.g. the computer or smartphone, operable. Well-known operating systems include Windows, Linux, Android and iOS

Blog / Blog article

A blog is a kind of online diary or journal (like a magazine or notebook). The authors of the entries are called bloggers

Bluetooth

Radio standard that makes it possible to link devices with each other over short distances (approx. 100m), e.g. to exchange data or link headphones and jukeboxes with devices

Browser

Program used to navigate the Internet, e.g. to enter Internet addresses or set bookmarks. Well-known browsers include Firefox, Safari and Chrome

C

Chat bot / Bot

"Bot" is short for "robot". For example, a chatbot chats automatically like a robot using programmed algorithms

Content Management System (CMS)

Program for creating and managing texts, images, videos and other content, e.g. to fill websites with content

Cookies

Small files that store information about you, your usage behavior and your website settings

Cloud / Cloud storage

A server (external computer) that offers you storage space to store your data

Creative Commons license

"Creative Commons" is a non-profit organization that provides various, very open licenses for the rights of use of e.g. texts, images, videos and pieces of music

D

Data carrier / external data carrier

An object on which digital data can be stored, e.g. a USB stick, a CD or a hard disk

GDPR

Abbreviation for the "European General Data Protection Regulation" (EU GDPR), the data protection law that applies to the entire EU and the European Economic Area

E

Terminal device / digital terminal device

Device that can be connected to a network (e.g. the Internet), such as a computer, laptop, smartphone, tablet or printer

F

Feed

Overview of published content (postings), e.g. on news portals or in social networks, which can be scrolled continuously (moved up and down) - sometimes also called "timeline"

Filter bubble

Assignments to interest groups/profiles based on user behavior, which decide what other content is displayed, e.g. in social networks

Firewall

Program that monitors data connections between computers and networks and can, for example, block unwanted transmissions

GIF

File format for moving images such as small animations, short video sequences or moving banners. Abbreviation of "Graphics Interchange Format"

H

Hardware

Electronic devices or parts that are installed in electronic devices (e.g. screen, keyboard or hard disk)

Hotspot

Public WLAN access

Imprint

Indication of responsibilities and contact options, e.g. for a website or an app

Incognito mode

Browser setting that contains various preset privacy measures so that only a small amount of data is collected from you

Contactless payment

Payment process via a radio signal (e.g. NFC) or the Internet (via an app)

Account / Account settings

An account is your personal profile in which you can make settings

Artificial intelligence

Machines and digital tools that are trained by algorithms to imitate human abilities such as logical thinking or creativity

Link

Abbreviation of "hyperlink", a clickable Internet address that is also used to link different websites

M

Messenger

Translated "courier" or "messenger" means an app for receiving and sending messages on a smartphone or tablet

N

Network / protected/ open network

The entirety of different computers/electronic devices that can send data to each other, e.g. via cable (LAN) or wirelessly (WLAN). Passwords and other measures determine whether a network is open or protected.

P

Personal data

Personal or personal data is information (or partial information) that relates to an individual and makes them identifiable, e.g. name, telephone number, account details, license plate number, etc.

Pop-up window

Additional windows that appear in a browser, usually with advertising content. Derived from the English "to pop up" = suddenly appear

Post / Posting

Publication of content (e.g. text, photo, video) on the Internet, usually in relation to social networks. The term is pronounced in English (with a long "o")

Calculator

Generalized abbreviation for a powerful, electronic computing device, e.g. computer or laptop (as opposed to small devices such as smartphones or tablets)

Router

Device for establishing data connections between different devices (e.g. establishing an Internet connection based on IP addresses)

S

Malicious program / malware

Computer programs designed to perform harmful functions, e.g. manipulating or deleting files, collecting data without permission or destroying programs

Screenshot

A snapshot of the screen

Sensitive data / confidential data

Sensitive data includes, for example, information on ethnic origin, political opinion, religious or philosophical beliefs, sexual orientation, health status or unique identifiers such as genetic and biometric data. In addition, various data that is not intended for the public may be confidential

Server / Server location

Computer (hardware) or program (software) that performs certain tasks for devices that are linked in a network, e.g. storing data

Smart Home

Collective term for objects and devices from the "home" sector that are Internet- or Bluetooth-enabled, e.g. coffee machines linked to apps, doorbells, roller shutters, light switches

Software

Computer program. Smaller programs or programs on mobile devices are often referred to as apps

Standby mode

Standby or standby mode of a device: It is deactivated, but the power supply is not completely interrupted

Search engines

A program that uses algorithms to help you find pages on the Internet

Timeline

Here: The collected presentation of current news/postings in a social network or short message service

Update

Updating software, i.e. a program/app

Encryption

Data is protected against modification or theft during transmission

W

WLAN

Wireless/wireless access to a local network, e.g. the Internet of a private individual, a company or a café. Short form of "Wireless Local Area Network"

Z

Two-factor authentication

Security measure for logging into a system (e.g. online banking) that includes at least two ways of identification
